CS373 Fall 2021: Blog 4
What did you do this past week?
This past week I did a lot of work. I have 2 major projects for my classes due in a week and a half, and I’ve been in deep continuing to plan my club’s biggest event (a game jam) that is happening next weekend. I’ve been trying to frontload all my work while still finding time to do some fun things so I don’t burn out. I’m really excited about our game jam, so the extra planning is worth it.
What’s in your way?
Work, mostly. I’m waiting to coordinate with my team for another class about when we’ll start a project, and I’m plugging away on another project, though it’s individual. We’ve got some last minute issues/planning to do for my club’s event, but it’s only a few more hurdles to jump until we’re ready.
What will you do next week?
Next week I will go to lectures, hopefully figure out who I’ll be working with on this class’ projects :), continue my current projects, and finalize my event planning. I’ll try to sneak in some fun and relaxation if I can, but the big euphoria will come the week after once all of it has been wrapped up.
If you read it, what did you think of the Paper #4: What Happens to Us?
It’s a sobering paper that shows us that we have to be better, and that the corporations we choose to work for are not any better. It’s up to individuals to look out for each other and work toward positive change in the workplace, though only so much can happen without top-down reform. Everyone deserves to be able to work without worrying about harassment or discrimination because of who they are.
What was your experience of Collatz, exceptions, and types?
Collatz went smoothly for me, which I’m happy about! As for exceptions and types, I remember talking about exceptions in Object Oriented Programming, so I was familiar with a lot of the things mentioned; however, with exceptions and types, it was interesting to see how Python handled them — especially with the cached ints and ability to use ‘is’ on them. I didn’t know that so it was neat to learn.
What made you happy this week?
I was working at the GDC for a long time on Friday, and around dinner time my girlfriend called me and asked if I wanted to go to Cabo Bob’s with her. We got some yummy dinner and ended up watching a movie together which was nice. A good break to end a busy week!
What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?
My pick-of-the-week is yet another YouTube channel Fireship (I’ve gotten really into programming Youtubers lately haha). He has videos on many different CS tools/fields, but gravitates towards Software Engineering. He explains things well and has engaging, well edited videos — I’ll likely be referring to some through this class.
